ChickenSoup @ Tuen Mun

Through the introduction by Dora Choi, a director at RTHK TV, who has done years of research on local poverty issues, The Associates was introduced to a local school in Tuen Mun, of which 60% of the student body is living below the poverty line.

Located at the west of the New Territories as a satellite city, Tuen Mun has a population of 500,000, of which 60% is under poverty. Tuen Mun is the most under-served community in Hong Kong in terms of social service centers.

The need for funding this year was due to a change in the selection progress by the charitable foundation, which funded a similar program.  Starting this year, funding will go to the programs receiving the highest vote by social service workers / beneficiary centers.  The school did not want to commit resources into a lobbying process.

Three individuals, who have been actively solicited by The Associates, sponsored the required financial investment: a local businessman, an accounting expatriate from Denmark and Michelle, a friend of The Associates.

Starting April 2014, ChickenSoup will partner with Foodlink foundation to launch this 5th center to serve 30 secondary school students with nutritious meals, comprehensive tutorials, mentoring and life skills education.  By hiring alumni from the school who went through similar life struggles as tutors, the program aims to improve our beneficiaries’ confidence and quality of life at home, in school, and in the community.
